BBA Trail Notes

The following is verbatim from the Fall 2007 Beaver Brook newsletter, The Log. The notes were written by Glenn Lloyd, Trail Maintainer

Once again Beaver Brook celebrated both National and N.H. Trails Days on June 2 and July 21 respectively. We finally experienced excellent weather on both days. Last year our June date was rained out and in July we worked in 95 plus degree heat. Pete Smith hosted both days and as usual kept us supplied with pizza, doughnuts and plenty to drink.

National Trails Day activities concentrated on trails in the Brown Lane Barn vicinity. A major re-route on the Big Tree Trail from meadow to tree-line moved the trail up to dry ground and enabled us to remove a long stretch of troublesome boardwalk. The Red Pine Trail received six replacement water-bars to insure continued proper drainage. The Howe Meadow Trail received another 10 ft. section of boardwalk and drainage clearing. Finally, three boardwalk sections from Big Tree Trail were moved to improve a large wet area on Elkins Road. Thanks to Adrienne Adams, Akira Yamamoto, Norm Byer, Beth Flagler, Alan Sauve, Dave Anderson and Joshua Paul for their assistance and hard work on these projects.

New Hampshire Trails Day was relatively cool, breezy, and bug-free. We concentrated on the Burns Farm Trails in Milford and had an excellent volunteer turnout. Milford Trail Maintainers Lou and Ed Carey had suggested culvert clearance, drainage work and pruning/brushing over the northern trail sections as potential projects. The culvert was cleared, drainages opened and this group managed to prune and brush the entire Burns Farm trail network. We also accomplished mowing, line-trimming, trail marker painting and some select field edge maintenance to clear a section of Burns Loop Trail before quitting time. It was a productive day thanks to the efforts of Bill Burns, Lou and Ed Carey, Denise Hurt, Ann Karcich, Dave Anderson, Alan Sauve, and Chuck Kurtz.

Once again a sincere thank-you to our Trail Days volunteers for their help in bringing these projects to a successful conclusion.
