    Mushroom Walk

    Description: On Sunday July 27th Beaver Brook Nature Center will host a mushroom walk from 10am to noon. Teacher and walk leader Stephanie Doyle will be taking a group out on the trails in search of wild mushrooms. Learn what features to use to safely identify wild mushrooms including toxic species as well as edibles. Remember to bring good hiking shoes, a basket for carrying mushrooms found, bug spray and plenty of water. Meet at Maple Hill Farm, 117 Ridge Rd, Hollis, NH.     Description: Learn about NH Bats in a Fish & Game presentation given by Cynthia Nichols.
    Then observe a bat roosting site at Maple Hill Farm to learn how to count bats as they
    exit for their evening meal. Participants with their own bat colonies can then collect data
    for the Fish and Game Summer Bat Colony Count.

    Description: Dig around to better understand the unseen worlds that make plant life flourish. Learn about compost, the chemical elements and the cycling of matter. Search for earthworms and roly-poly isopods. (Develop a deeper appreciation for the vital work of bacteria, protists and fungi, and take home a coloring sheet illustrating some of the important citizens of soil.)

    Description: Fruits and Seeds - Dispersal in all its glory. With the 'Berry in the Beak' game, a hike and a traveling rabbit to make, for youngsters will gain a new appreciation of physical and behavioral adaptations, visual and olfactory signaling, and the intricacies of co-evolution in general. Sample the delicious fruits of some common plants that use taste to recruit animals to help them with the challenging task of seed transport.

    Description: Humans and Plants: Beyond Food- to tea, medicine and wood, etc! Look at various plants that have been used for fragrance, medicine, teas and as materials for important everyday objects and tasks. Tour BBA gardens to learn a few of the stories behind some of its beautiful residents. Learn how to make fresh tea, and if time, try to learn about some of the varied trees of this area and their roles in both legend and history. Plan for a challenging relay race to test how well you can recall what you've heard and seen.
